Learn the business of business

CT State offers valuable training in current business practices. You can transfer to a four-year college or university if you wish to continue your studies, or enter directly into a career field.

With over 35 associate in science (A.S.) degrees and certificates in a broad range of business disciplines, students that desire a career in business can complete foundational work at CT State. Jobs in the business and finance sector in Connecticut are projected to grow by 10% between 2020 and 2030.

Business at CT State

Many students choose to study disciplines such as accounting, business management and marketing, while those who wish to start their own business will find that entrepreneurship studies are a must.

Courses have been designed to help students develop critical thinking and analytical skills, effective oral and written communication skills, and a solid understanding of the “business of business”. Additionally, students learn practical business skills through developing and participating in classroom projects that explore timely business topics, becoming active in student government, or building experience by working on-campus or off.

Business Programs Curricula

The general education core curricula in each business degree is an integral part of every CT State program and the specific course options provided will also fulfill the general education requirements of many four-year institutions. Credit-bearing certificates, which are of a shorter duration than degrees, prepare students to enter directly into the workforce or add to a student’s existing job skills.

Pathways to Success

With an increasing number of students looking to continue their studies and receive a bachelor’s degree, many will start their coursework at CT State because of its high-quality instruction, and more affordable tuition and fees. CT State has developed excellent relationships with neighboring college and university partners to ensure that graduates are able to transfer the maximum number of credits.

CT State, through its program advisory councils, career services and cooperative education functions, has developed countless relationships with business and industry leaders across the state. From multinational industry leaders, like United Technologies, to local start-ups, CT State students have access to the latest in business education, from both an academic and industry view.

Plan to Transfer

Students who are planning to transfer are encouraged to meet with their Guided Pathways Advisor or program coordinator to discuss how courses transfer to other institutions. Students who plan to transfer to one of the four Connecticut state universities or Charter Oak State College may want to consider the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities (CSCU) transfer pathway degrees.

Opportunities for Current Workers

In addition to credit certificates, CT State also offers short-term career training certificates that do not earn college credit. These certificates are ideal for individuals that wish to complement their existing job skills, or who may wish to explore college before committing fully to a credit program.

Application Information

CT State is an open admissions institution, with the exception of the college’s selective healthcare programs. An application for admission is required of all new credit students, and all students are encouraged to complete the Free Application for Federal Financial Aid at www.fafsa.gov. Completing the FAFSA is also the first step in determining eligibility for free tuition.

Students interested in a non-credit course or certificate can find out more about career training offered by our Workforce Development and Continuing Education division.
